Crop Conditions & Agronomy Advice: What Our Agronomists Are Seeing in the Fields

June 9, 2025 Edition

The growing season is picking up momentum, and our Ag Plus agronomy team has been busy scouting fields and advising growers across the region. Here’s what we’re seeing in the field right now — and a few insights to help you make the most of the next few weeks.

🌽 Corn: Stronger Programs Paying Off

Warm temperatures and sunshine are helping corn bounce back beautifully, and many fields are taking on a healthy green hue. We’re seeing clear advantages in corn programs with more horsepower behind them — they’re showing real dividends this year.

Pre-Emerge Insights:

Some pre programs are performing significantly better than others, especially where giant ragweed pressure is increasing. Choosing the right herbicide with residual control has proven crucial.

Post-Emerge Insights:

Several post applications are delivering excellent results and earning strong feedback from growers.
Tank mixes that include a residual + a broad-spectrum partner are helping clean up tough acres.
On the flip side, more cost-conscious or minimal programs are showing mixed performance, especially where weed pressure is high.

Corn stages right now range from V1 to V5, depending on planting date and location.

📌 Pro Tip: The most successful growers are sticking with the philosophy of Plan for Success, Expect Success. Flirting with failure rarely pays.

🌱 Soybeans: Spray Season Has Arrived

Spraying is well underway on soybean acres. Pre-emerge applications have been average overall, with timing making a big difference.

Earlier applications are holding better, especially with the rains we’ve had to help with activation.
Soybeans are ranging from VE to V3, and now’s the time to stay sharp on post-emerge planning to protect yield potential.

🌾 Small Grains: Fungicide Timing Approaching

We’re seeing flag leaves emerging in early-planted oats — signaling it’s almost fungicide time.

This spring has set us up for a solid small grain crop, but now’s the time to scout closely for armyworms. We typically see activity around this stage, and staying ahead of pressure can prevent serious damage.

🌿 Alfalfa: Weevils Are Active

First cutting is wrapping up, but insect pressure is high in many fields. Most fields are already at or near threshold — especially if you account for recent weather conditions.

Weevil populations are small but fierce — and with new growth just starting to emerge, expect aggressive feeding.
Slower regrowth is likely in untreated fields. This is the perfect time to apply Haymaker TKO to knock down pest pressure and protect forage quality.

📌 Better Feed. Better Beef (or Milk). It all starts here.
