Insects, Savings & Support for Southwest MN Growers

August 7, 2025 Edition

We're cruising into the back half of the season, and while things are looking solid in many spots, there’s still plenty of opportunity — and risk — in the field. Here's what to keep an eye on this week across Southwest Minnesota:

Corn: Looks great — but don’t get comfortable

Your corn is moving fast and looks strong — but now’s not the time to coast.

Scout for corn rootworm — especially in continuous corn acres. Root feeding is showing up, and it's sneaky. Dig some plants, split the roots, and check for feeding or lodging.
Many fields are nearing or already in dent stage. Full maturity is around the corner, so watch kernel development and tip-back.
Yield monitor calibration — Get this done now, before the combine rolls. It matters.
Keep notes on hybrids showing performance differences — it’ll help with 2025 planning.

Soybeans: Aphids are moving — fast

Aphid pressure is escalating across the region — and they can double in population every couple days under the right conditions.

Scout now!
Line up aerial apps now with insecticide in the tank. Waiting too long can mean yield loss.
Watch for Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS) and white mold, especially in thick canopies with wet soil.

Fall Fertilizer: Lock it in now

Early booking = early savings. Dry and NH3 programs are lining up now.
Planning now means smoother fall execution — and less stress when the weather turns.
